Smart Fishing: 5G Boosting Fishing Yield in Indonesia

Gorontalo is among Indonesia's regions with the greatest potential in marine economy, boasting a coastline that stretches 903.7 kilometers. Maritime affairs and fisheries are key economic sectors in the area. According to data from Indonesia's Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, up to 19,013 fishermen rely on the sea for their livelihoods. The availability of internet infrastructure is vital for fostering the high-quality development of the local marine digital economy.

MarineMobile: 5G Solution for Fishermen's Operational Challenges

In February 2023, Telkomsel, Indonesia's leading mobile operator, joined hands with ZTE to test the use of 5G networks to meet the digital connectivity needs of Indonesia's maritime regions. As a continuation of the collaborative commitment between both companies, Telkomsel, in partnership with ZTE, has further launched MarineMobile, a long range mobile communications solution aimed at helping fishermen overcome the operational challenges they frequently encounter. This solution provides access to weather forecasts, optimal fishing location determination, GPS tracking, and real-time access to direct fish buyers in the market.

Through the improvement in quality and expansion of Telkomsel's broadband network coverage in the maritime region of Gorontalo, using ZTE's 5G radio devices with Active Antenna technology that can achieve a coverage distance of up to 72 km for 2G GSM, 69 km for 4G/LTE, and 60 km for 5G in open waters, fishermen can now access MarineMobile to use third-party applications. This enhances operational effectiveness and efficiency, reduces costs, and increases profits through more precise fishing activities.

Leveraging 5G to Unlock Indonesia's Maritime Potential

Nugroho, Telkomsel's Chief Technology Officer, stated, "According to data from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries in 2022, the potential fishery resources in the 11 State Fisheries Management Areas (WPPNRI) are estimated to be approximately 12.01 million tons per year. In line with the spirit of Indonesia, which inspires Telkomsel to bridge the nation and drive progress through the availability of cutting-edge broadband network infrastructure, the strategic collaboration between Telkomsel and ZTE is a joint effort to realize Indonesia's maritime potential by implementing innovative 5G technology, starting with the Gorontalo region. By synergizing with stakeholders to advance the national digital transformation roadmap, we aim to foster inclusive and sustainable economic growth for Indonesia."

Richard Liang, President Director of ZTE Indonesia, said, "Amid the evolving maritime connectivity landscape, ZTE is delighted to partner with Telkomsel to introduce the MarineMobile solution. Amidst the various options available, this solution aids fishermen in seamless communication, even in the most challenging maritime environments. We recognize that technology's role extends beyond connectivity and encompasses protection and overall efficiency improvement. Our collaborative efforts with Telkomsel through the MarineMobile solution aim to empower fishermen to make informed decisions, streamline tasks, and optimize productivity. Thus, creating a transformative journey ensures not only every expedition becomes safer and smarter but ultimately more productive."

Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in 2020, Gorontalo Province is one of the potentially significant maritime regions in Indonesia, with marine resources totaling 115,812 tons worth IDR 2.643 billion annually (more than USD 160k) from various types of fish, including tuna, skipjack, mackerel, shrimp, and other products . As a result of the collaboration between Telkomsel and ZTE in enhancing the broadband network in the coastal areas of Batudaa Pantai sub-district, based on the latest data from the Department of Marine and Fisheries of Gorontalo Regency for the year 2023, the fish catch volume has increased by 11% to a total of 9,070 tons in the second quarter of 2023 compared to the previous year.
